Protecting our threatened shorebirds and seabirds

Birdlife Australia aims to achieve significant outcomes for threatened coastal shorebirds and seabirds in the Coorong, with the goal of preventing extinction. Regular monitoring of the Coorong and involvement of trained volunteers is vital to this.

Why was the project important?

The Coorong wetland system supports the highest abundance and diversity of shorebirds in South Australia, and the Murray Mouth in particular, is a significant nesting site for the Endangered Fairy Tern. Managing threats and protecting habitat in this area is vital to secure the role this coastal wetland plays in global shorebird conservation.

How did the Grassroots Grant help?

With the support of Limestone Coast Grassroots Grants, Birdlife Australia can ensure volunteers have the capacity and confidence to participate in biannual counts and data collection. Through workshops designed to deliver shorebird and seabird training, it is possible to recruit new volunteers. The program will enable the monitoring to continue well into the future.

Words of advice for future grant applicants.

Collaboration with the Limestone Coast Landscape Board staff when developing your application is integral to the process. Providing letters of support from other organisations which will benefit from your project will also strengthen your application - Good Luck!
